Originally bushland, the picturesque 56 acre
Blackboy Ridge property was planted to vines in 1978 making it one of the oldest
vineyards in Western Australia. The current owners Adrian Jones and Jackie
Barton purchased the property in 1999 with the release of the first vintage
under the Blackboy Ridge label in 2003.
The vineyard itself is set amongst Jarrah and
Marri woodland, located high in the hills overlooking the town of Donnybrook. The
vineyard is divided equally between plantings of red and white varieties, namely
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Semillon and Chenin Blanc. All these varieties are
well suited to the Mediterranean climate, and thrive on the gentle north
facing slopes of gravely loam soils which are common in the Geographe region.
The aim at Blackboy Ridge is to grow premium quality
grapes, strong in varietal flavours to create elegant wines. All of the estate's
fruit is hand picked from netted, dry grown vines to maintain the highest
quality, with wine making being undertaken
